What to Expect During Cryotherapy Treatment
During Cryotherapy treatment the body is exposed to cold temperatures for several minutes. Cryotherapy is administered to a targeted area or the entire body. If you choose localized Cryotherapy, it can be administered with an ice massage, an ice pack, a coolant spray, an ice bath or a probe inserted in the tissue. For whole-body Cryotherapy you are exposed to negative 200–300°F air for 2-4 minutes in a small enclosure with an opening for your head.
The Benefits of Cryotherapy
While the benefits of Cryotherapy are still under study, the treatment has been used successfully for a variety of disorders. Cryotherapy can cool the blood to treat migraine pain. Athletes find that the treatment numbs the pain of irritated nerves. Cryotherapy is also used to reduce arthritis pain, allowing rehabilitation programs to become more effective. The treatment has also been reported to prevent dementia and help treat low-risk tumors and mood disorders.
Deciding on the Cryotherapy Option
While Cryotherapy helps many people with a range of disorders, the treatment is not for everyone. People with diabetes and conditions that affect their nerves are not good candidates for the treatment. It’s a good idea to consult with your doctor before making a decision.
